Stencilling puts graphics, shapes and intricate detail onto a wall as part of the plaster finish rather than as something painted on afterwards. The pattern is picked out in a contrasting texture, colour or metallic effect over whatever base finish the wall is carrying, so it catches the light differently from the surface around it instead of sitting flat against it.
A logo in polished plaster in a reception, a boardroom or an office makes the point more quietly than signage does, and it is not something a competitor can order off a shelf. Custom stencils are cut for the design, so a monogram or a company mark comes out exactly as drawn.
Traditional damask through to contemporary geometric; subtle and tone-on-tone, or bold and high contrast. It works on ceilings and columns as readily as on walls.
Stencilling demands the highest standard of plasterwork beneath it. A hard-edged pattern shows up every flaw in the surface it sits on, which is why it belongs on finishes that are already being laid and polished carefully — the work at JAK's Bar & Steakhouse in Douglas and at the Haus showroom sits on exactly that kind of base.
