Render Systems

External rendering, built for this climate

Everything on this page is an external wall coating. What separates them is what they are made of, how thick they go on, and what they are being asked to do — keep weather out, let a wall breathe, hold heat in, or simply make a tired elevation look like a new building.

The Island is hard on renders. Driven rain, salt air on the coast, and solid-walled Victorian stock that was never built to be sealed up. Most of what goes wrong with a render here is a breathability problem rather than a strength problem, which is why the mineral and lime systems do so much of the work.

The systems we use

Traditional Cement Render and Pebbledash are on their own pages.

Insulated render systems (EWI)

Over a third of the energy required to heat a property escapes through the external walls. Insulated render systems — a form of exterior wall insulation (EWI) — are the perfect solution and a great way to cut your building's carbon footprint.

Our EWI is fitted in two parts: first, a coat of thermal insulation is applied to the building; then a specialist lightweight render system is applied over the top to seal it. This mineral-based product is applied in just one coat, saving hours of application time, significantly reducing labour and scaffold costs, and minimising disruption.

The thermal insulation layer forms a barrier that keeps heat in on cold days and out on warm days. The lightweight render can be applied in any colour or texture, transforming a tired, dated exterior into a stunning, warm and modern one — and it comes with a ten-year guarantee.

How the system is built up

Insulation boards are fixed to the outside of the property, mechanically, adhesively, or both. That is encapsulated with a mesh reinforcement, a base coat, and then the decorative finish of your choice. The layers encase the building and stop heat escaping through the walls.

It suits “hard to heat” homes especially — solid-walled properties with no cavity to fill.
