Crystal Quartz Through a Kitchen, Utility and W.C.
Isle of Man
2021
Crystal Quartz gets noticed for the way it glitters, but the reason it gets specified is what it is made of. It is a decorative render built on quartz aggregate — strong, durable and waterproof — which is why it goes into the rooms that get wet, and not only the ones meant to be looked at.
Being waterproof and easily cleaned, it works as a replacement for conventional tiling in a shower enclosure, a wet room or a kitchen, and it can go straight over the existing tiles rather than replacing them — which is exactly what happened on the bathroom refurbishment below. Nothing is left to grout, and so nothing is left to clean.
The same durability suits the places in constant use: communal halls and stairways in apartment buildings, hotels, offices and student accommodation, and commercial interiors such as Drewry's Barbers at Tynwald Mills.
Crystal Quartz is not restricted to interiors. Externally it runs from rendering a whole house down to smaller pieces — pillars, concrete window sills and porches, like the front porch on this page. It can be applied straight onto plasterboard as well as onto brick or blockwork.
There are over twenty-five colour aggregates to work from, which gives hundreds of combinations before any glitter is added — and the glitters and holograms run to hundreds of colours of their own. Matching an existing kitchen or bathroom unit is straightforward.
